Mackenzie Cox, age 15, was born in Calgary, Alberta, and has lived in the City of Airdrie for the majority of her life. She’s been drawing as long as she could hold a pencil, but that isn’t her only interest. Mackenzie loves children, and because of that, has set her mind on becoming a elementary school teacher. Mackenzie strives to have everything she is working on done immediately but done well. She shares her contagious bubbly personality with the world around her, brightening faces everyday!
Currently, Mackenzie is a grade 10 student, and is on the road to success that begins with her first book, “When I Grow Up.” Mackenzie started her project December 2016. She was inspired by her trip to Banff, AB when she visited the art galleries. One gallery in particular had an artists work of colourful painted animals. Mackenzie went home and drew an owl and a fox just for fun and coloured them in a way that mimicked the paintings she had seen on her travels. After that one drawing everyone encouraged Mackenzie to create a children's book using the characters. Mackenzie wrote a rough draft and then hit a block and stopped until her teachers encouraged her to begin the project again a year later and actually get it published with their help. Working with her all time favorite medium, Copic Markers she drew, coloured, wrote and edited for two months before finally publishing on blurb a free publishing website. Mackenzie is over the moon about her new book and cannot wait for everyone to read it!
